Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Group Chairman Mubarak Jassim Kanoo passed away early this morning.

Born in Bahrain in 1930, Mr Kanoo was a visionary and a pillar of the community in Bahrain.

He achieved his undergraduate degree from American University of Beirut and his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1970. In 1951, he took over the family’s travel business, which was made up of three employees at the time. In the same year, Kanoo Travel achieved IATA status. He also established trading licences in Dubai in 1961 and Abu Dhabi in 1963. 

In 1984, Mr Kanoo’s role in strengthening commercial relations with Britain was recognized by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and received the Honourary Knight Commander of the British Empire. Mr Kanoo was also chairman of AXA Insurance (Gulf), Aeradio Technical Services W.L.L., Bahrain Ship Repairing & Engineering Company and Bahrain Philanthropic Society, as well as the president of Bahrain Japan Business and Friendship Society.

His funeral will be held tomorrow (February 13) after dhuhr prayers at Manama Cemetery. Condolences will be accepted for men until Thursday at Kanoo Majlis in Mahooz and for women at late Hamad Kanoo’s home at Villa 1328, Road 3429, Block 334 in Mahooz.
